I neglected to put a deadline on our “Non-horror horror recommendations” Batman trade giveaway — we’ve got two entries so far (both eerily enough about Affable Al Moore!):
Alfonso:
The Watchmen is a non-Horror comic that is actually a horror graphic novel posing as a melodrama
Archibald:
A careful reading of the ending of A Small Killing by Alan Moore reveals some story elements typical of the horror genre.
If you’d like to also throw your hat in the ring, reply with your own non-horror horror rec before Sunday.
1. Comic Con
A little heads up — the Berkeley Public Library is holding a mini-convention Saturday Nov 9. Among those paneling is Julia Wertz who, even though her more recent books are set largely in NYC, is no stranger to these parts.
Her latest book starts off with a great teaser (with situationally appropriate expletive).
2. Underground Manga
Garo was a highly influential magazine in Japan publishing underground manga from a whole roster of weirdo faves like Maruo Suehiro. Fans that clear our shelves of Junji Ito would definitely do well to get some Suehiro books, if only they could stay in print!
For the English market, we’ve gotten the occasional out-of-print sampling of Garo artists here and there, but as for the issues of Garo themselves, you’d be forced to book a plane ticket and some months of intensive language study to get a look at the source.
No longer! Some hero has uploaded a boatload of issues up to archive.org spanning the 60s to the 2000s!
3. More Fantastic Gaming
In solidarity with the NYT tech-workers strike, we’ve whipped up some Fantastic Comics-themed Wordle puzzles to tide you over next week, which you are welcome to binge away ahead of time.
